These are pictures from our anual Spring weekend in Letchworth State Park. We stay in the Glen Iris Inn near the South end of the park. It's a beautiful little traditional inn -- more along the lines of a "Bed and Breakfast", but with an excellent restaurant. The Inn was originally the home of William Pryor Letchworth, who donated the major portion of the land that now makes up the park.
One note on the pictures: This weekend was a little earlier than we normally go down. Add to this the fact that we had a very late start to Spring this year (we had several inches of snow on Easter morning), and you can see that the trees are quite bare this year. On a technical note, the lack of green color in the photographs, along with the bright open sunlight seem to have confused the autoexposure on my camera, causing it to wash out many of the pictures. I did a little fiddling with exposure to see if I could correct, with mixed results. I may be able to do a little post-processing to correct some of the color intensity. It was a bit grey in the woods, but there were still lots of signs of Spring, including some Trillium, deep in the woods, along some of the shaded banks of streams.
However, the weather was absolutely beautiful this weekend, with mild temperatures, a slight breeze, and bright sunshine the whole weekend.
The dam pictured at the end of the page is the Mt. Morris Dam, built by the Army Corps of Engineers, and completed in 1952. It is a "dry dam", meaning it is usually empty, except in cases of high water flow, in which case it controls the rate at which water is released to control flooding damage downstream.
I also tried to take a couple of "desktop background" images -- pictures with an interesting pattern, but not so busy that they are distracting. Feel free to download and use these pictures!
